If you suffer from nasal congestion, you’re probably tired of breathing difficulties, disrupted sleep and paying steep medical fees for treatments that don’t always help. But there is another way. With Chordate Kinetic Oscillation Stimulation (KOS) available at the Sleeping Disorders Centre at 150 Harley Street, you can experience non-invasive, patient-friendly treatment that provides fast-action relief to help you breathe easily again.

Non-allergic rhinitis

Rhinitis is a common condition that causes problems with breathing. It is divided into two sub-categories – allergic and non-allergic. Whereas allergic rhinitis (AR) is caused by a caused by a reaction to specific allergens, non-allergic rhinitis (NAR) can be triggered by a variety of factors, including:

  • Bacteria
  • Animal, dust, chemical or grain antigens
  • Pregnancy
  • Certain medications
  • Spicy food

Symptoms of NAR include a blocked or runny nose, reduced sense of smell and mild irritation in and around the nose. It causes breathing difficulties and can make sleeping difficult, which in turn leads to fatigue during the day, therefore affecting your performance at work.

Common treatments for NAR come in the form of antihistamine medication or surgery, or a combination of the two. As well as being expensive, these sometimes carry side-effects and don’t guarantee appropriate relief from symptoms. Cordate KOS therapy at The Sleeping Disorders Centre can give you a simple, non-invasive treatment that takes just 20 minutes and provides almost instant relief, without the use of surgery or pharmaceuticals.

What is KOS therapy?

This modern treatment for NAR is a non-invasive procedure performed in an outpatient environment. With this therapy, you could experience significant relief from rhinitis symptoms almost instantly. Imagine being able to breathe easily without having to undergo surgery or take a course of antihistamines!

How does it work?

NAR causes congestion by inflaming the nasal mucosa and dilating the blood vessels. The congestion can also be caused by the nervous system failing to detect the airflow. KOS therapy is designed to stimulate the nasal mucosa and ANS (autonomic nervous system), providing you with relief within a few days if not straight away. Within six months, your breathing could be dramatically improved.

The procedure

The KOS therapy procedure is very simple at the Sleeping Disorders Centre. We’ll gently insert an inflatable balloon on the end of a catheter into the nasal cavity. The balloon will then be filled with air so that it oscillates and stimulates the nasal mucosa. It only takes 10 minutes per nasal cavity, but we might recommend a second session in a month’s time to make sure you experience optimum relief from your symptoms. Although the treatment is generally not uncomfortable, your nose is very sensitive and you might experience eye watering, sneezing, mild discomfort or a slight burning sensation during treatment. However, this should subside fairly quickly after the procedure.

The benefits

This non-invasive procedure is an excellent way to combat NAR and it comes with a variety of benefits, including:

  • The procedure is non-surgical and you won’t need anaesthesia
  • You won’t experience any scarring
  • There’s no need for medication
  • Results are almost instant and you’ll experience relief from your rhinitis in a few days at the latest
  • The outstanding results can last for up to six months and repeat treatment is available after one month
